Seve showed his true character after missing the 1981 tournament. His singles match against Fuzzy Zoeller became legendary when Seve hit a miraculous recovery shot with a 3-wood out of a deep fairway bunker to secure a halved match. Despite his efforts, Europe lost by the narrowest of margins.

Seve's form began to grow erratic during this period due to severe back problems. Despite this, he and Olazábal managed to squeeze out two team wins together. It wasn't enough to carry the side, and the US reclaimed the cup on English soil.

His eighth and final appearance as a player. While his long game struggled and he lost both his pairs matches, he stepped up massively in Sunday's singles. Seve defeated Tom Lehman in a critical match, providing a huge psychological lift that sparked Europe's monumental Sunday comeback victory.

This was Seve's crowning achievement in the event. Serving as the first-ever continental European captain, he led the team on home soil in Spain.
